Emerging artists from different European origins and from any genres or working interdisciplinary will need to apply for the programme with their portfolios, details of artist statement relating to the NOMAD programme theme, the approach and field of research that this new work will be involved, as well as their plans for future career development.
By October 2008, 10 finalists are to be chosen and announced by an international jury consisting of the NOMAD board members and experts of the NOMAD programme according to the selection criteria. Artists need to fulfil these quality standards to be part of the programme, as they are considered indispensable attributes towards an understanding of contemporary art and the art market:
- the relevance of their work and artist statement to the programme theme and our contemporary society in general
- potential of development and not yet established in the art market
- be able to articulate intentions and artistic ideas during the selection process
- be able to engage in exchange processes within the network and the professional field
- the readiness to question themselves during the work process of developing artistic statements
- their openness for further development through discussions with fellow artists and experts.
The artist development and residency programme, NOMADa.i.r., includes following phases:
Research phase: workshops and lectures by experts from international art sector. Preparation of their own work. Exchange with fellow artists and tutors.
Production phase: all participants will be working together at SODAart studio in Vienna and produce the planned work.
Presentation phase: Numerous project presentations will take place, including touring exhibitions of final artworks in renowned contemporary art institutions, publications, exhibition side-programmes, artist presentations and NOMADnet meetings.
Organisational and financial framework
SODAart will cover for
- Travel expenses
Flight or train ticket to the Residence
Flight or train ticket from the first residence (Berlin or Nice) to the production studio in Vienna
Flight or train ticket from Vienna to return home
- Accommodation
A sheered apartment during the residence
In some cases double rooms have to be shared. Shares kitchen, shared bathrooms
- Means at the working place
Working places, Internet access (you will be handed out a complete list of technical equipment, hardware and software).
- Production costs
NOMAD pays a contribution to each artist for the production of the final artworks. This sum can not extend the amount of € 1.000.- and will be transferred to the artists personal account after receiving the original bills. Only original bills will be accepted.
- Honorarium
NOMAD pays a small fee of € 500.- to each artist, in order to be able to pay entrance fees or buy food and cover running expenses back home. This fee will be handed out in the production phase in Vienna. Damages to the apartments, studios or other property of the programme or the programmes partners can result in deductions of the honorarium.
The artist must take care of
- A health insurance for abroad (we will need you to fax a confirmation in advance)
- Technical equipment needed that is not on site (Photo cameras, Hardware, Software)
- Meals (there is a shared kitchen available at the apartments)
- Washing of Laundry
- Please inform the SODAart administration in case you need an invitation letter for your Visa in time
- Leaving the apartments and studios in the same condition as found. The group of artists is responsible of the shared rooms. All rooms must be cleaned up before departure.
